I was recently trying to do some research using the Wayback Machine at Archive (dot) org, when I came across a 2009 forum thread about fake Krugerrands and how to detect them.
Like most forums, there are some members with zero knowledge, and others who have acquired a little knowledge, which according to the old adage is dangerous.
I selected a few choice examples, this being one:
In an earlier post, one “expert” had said:
“Counterfeit Kugerrands are Tungsten strikes BECAUSE tungsten has the same specific gravity as 90% Gold. Calipers will not be of any use because the coins would have the very SAME VOLUME if they are of the same DENSITY. So forget about physical measurements. That will not help you.”…
…”The way to check your Kugerrand is to assay the metal. Get yourself a scratchstone and some 14K acid. Scratch the edge of the coin on the scratchstone and apply acid to the streak left on the scratchstone. If the streak left by the coin changes in color…then you have a problem. If it does not react then you are good to go. ACID DOES NOT LIE.”
Another “expert” had pointed out his spelling error, but laughably mis-spelt the alleged mis-spelling as “Kuggerand”, and “corrected” it to “Kruggerand”, whereas the original mis-spelling was “Kugerrand(s)”! As if to heighten the comic effect, he went on to say “Thank you for letting me vent my fustration.”
Happily, yet another “expert” pointed this out, but then ended up sounding like a conspiracy theorist.
Other spelling errors I noted included “krugs” (OK it’s a lazy abbreviation rather than a spelling error, but it should be Krugs with a capital K), krug, krugerrand, krugerrands, krugger, kruggers, and one I had never seen before “Krug’er”!
I might point out that I once had a 1971 Krug, which was so good that we ordered another bottle of it. Our bank manager was paying, and he got his expenses queried for buying not one but two relatively expensive bottles of excellent wine.
